TORONTO, Canada (July 18, 2010) – No. 10 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Gustavo Yacamán claimed his first podium of the season in the Firestone Indy Lights Toronto 100 on the Streets of Toronto. His third-place finish also marks his best career finish in Firestone Indy Lights.
With starting position crucial to street courses due to lack of passing opportunities, Yacamán did his job on Saturday by qualifying the car in the second row in fourth position, his best starting position of the season. Going in to the Sunday morning race, Yacamán was focused and confident.
The race proved to be one of the most exciting of the year with Yacamán right in the middle of the racing action. While the first half of the race was caution-free, the yellow flags indicating a full-course caution waved on Lap 25 and again on Lap 31, bunching the field.
With the hard-charging No. 26 of Charlie Kimball right on his back-wing, Yacamán maintained his position while also challenging for the third spot for the remainder of the 50-lap race. On the final lap, Yacamán was able to take over the third position as the second-place No. 2 car of James Hinchcliffe lost two positions before making contact with another car and going into the tire barriers.
“I feel awesome, it’s my first podium,” the 19-year-old Colombian driver said. “We did a great job all weekend. We worked as a team, and we win as a team. It was a really long race, and it was mentally demanding. You feel like you are bouncing off the walls. I don’t think I have ever been that close to the wall before! The guys did an awesome job, and I am happy for them. They really deserved this.”
It was a good points day for Yacamán as he moved up to 7th in the point standings. He trails sixth-place Stefan Wilson by only 11 points.
There is little time for the team to celebrate as they head West to Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the Edmonton 100 in less than one week. The second-street course event in two weeks will be held at the Edmonton City Centre Airport on July 24. All the racing action can be seen on streaming video at www.indycar.com.
