McKenna Had Busy Weekend in Indianapolis

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (June 2, 2010) – Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Patrick McKenna celebrated his Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda victory with a stop at Indianapolis Motor Speedway Victory Lane, just hours before the Indianapolis 500 and in front of the large crowd.

As part of the Road to Indy Summit weekend, race winners from USF2000 and Star Mazda, both part of the Road to Indy Program, were introduced and interviewed at IMS. McKenna hopes this will be the first of many trips to the famed Victory Lane.

“Getting the opportunity to be introduced and interviewed in victory circle before the start of the 500 was amazing,” McKenna said. “To stand on victory circle alone was a great experience but to be introduced in front of so many people and as one of the weekend winners was something special. It topped off a great weekend.”

As his guest, McKenna brought his co-driver Josh Fielding, who had his race cut short with an incident near the halfway point of the 50-mile race.

In addition to racing, both McKenna and Fielding were able to take advantage of the many programs and seminars offered for the Road to Indy drivers. McKenna started the week off by participating in a Q&A session with Star Mazda driver Conor Daly and Firestone Indy Lights driver Pippa Mann.

The Q&A session was held at the IMS Coke Plaza during community day and was mediated by Kevin Lee.

The next day, the drivers were provided track laps by racing legend Rick Mears, and the Welcome Reception later in the evening provided the young drivers to meet racing officials, team owners and potential sponsors.

“The track laps with Rick Mears were pretty cool, he was a very interesting guy to talk to and to learn from,” McKenna said. “The Road to Indy reception was fun, Michelle Kish (USF2000 Official) introduced us to the head of IRL, Randy Bernard, and it was great to meet with him.”

With his first win in the United States, coupled with the information he gained during the Road to Indy Summit, McKenna is focused on the championship and ready to stand at the famed IMS Victory Lane in the near future.

Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing was formed in 2010 as a partnership between two successful racing entities. With leadership from brothers Nicholas and Dominic Cape, and along with Wayne Taylor and his organization in Indianapolis, the team campaigns cars in Firestone Indy Lights with Gustavo Yacamán, as well as the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda with drivers Josh Fielding and Patrick McKenna.
