INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana (May 29, 2010) – In an action-packed race, the No. 2 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Patrick McKenna started from pole and claimed victory in Round 3 of the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda.
The 50-lap race was held the night before the famed historic Indianapolis 500 at nearby O’Reilly Raceway Park.
No. 8 Andretti Autosports machine of Sage Karam was able to pass McKenna in the first laps, and the two battled nose-to-tail for the lead. McKenna continued to work on Karam, and he finally claimed the top spot back and ultimately was able to pull away.
"Winning my first race in the US is great, and to do it on an oval is especially satisfying as I'd never even attended an oval race before this weekend" McKenna said. "I knew it was going to be a really close race, but Sage raced me fair, which I appreciate. After I got around him I was able to get a gap and when I was out in front it was a dream, really."
This is the first oval victory for McKenna. The young Irishmen completed his first laps on an oval track just weeks ago during the series’ open testing at the 0.686-mile O’Reilly Raceway Park.
No. 3 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing driver Josh Fielding qualified his machine in the 10th position with a lap time of 47.874. Fielding also drove on an oval for the first time at the open test, but an early incident limited his testing time.
On Lap 20, the No. 2 of Fielding and the No. 31 Arms up Motorsports machine of Joe Tovo made contact and ended the drivers’ day early. Both drivers walked away from their cars. Fielding finished 11th.
Next up for Fielding, McKenna and Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is Round 4 of USF2000 at Iowa Speedway on June 19th. Tickets can be purchased at www.iowaspeedway.com or by calling 641-791-8100.
