British Karting Champion Josh Fielding will make the leap across the pond and race fulltime in the United States. He will team with Cape Motorports with Wayne Taylor Racing in the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda.
After testing with Fielding at the Andersen test track, it was clear that the driver and team gelled perfectly in and out of the car. The weather, however, proved to be problematic as Fielding travelled 8,000 miles to the sun of Florida to have a downpour rain storm limited the dry running time to one hour.
“The test was amazing, it felt like I had been in the car all year,” Fielding said. “You need to be with one of two teams in F2000, and I’m proud to be with one of them. I will be doing my best to repay (The Cape Brothers for) their faith in me by going straight out for wins. The America racing scene is huge, and we have so many followers already, teams, fans and most important, companies. I'm already looking at the big prize at the end of the season.”
Dominic and Nicholas Cape have won multiple championships in the USF2000, IMSA Lites and Cooper Series. In 2007, the brothers engineered programs in the Indy Lights Series with teams such as Andersen Racing, where they won the Rookie of the Year title with J.R. Hildebrand. Cape brothers also have experience in the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series in the top-tier Daytona Prototype class. Their experience in helping to develop young talents includes the likes of Daytona Prototype drivers Ricky Taylor and Dane Cameron, as well as Hildebrand, Jay Howard and Wade Cunningham in open wheel racing.
Having made the decision with his management team, P1, Fielding chose to move to Florida to be closer to his new team, which is based in St. Petersburg, Fla.
“It was clear where we needed to be, however, we had to make sure we could do the deal properly,” according to a representative from Fielding’s management company, P1. “Josh is determined to be the next British driver in Indy Car and with the new 'Road to Indy' program, where a driver with the talent has the right people behind him, it’s possible. We will be working very hard in the States to keep Josh racing and winning. The two hardest parts are done, we have a great team and Josh is very, very quick, we just need to transform this all into a championship-winning year.
