(ST. PETERSBURG, Fla) March 29, 2010 -- Racing on the Streets of St. Petersburg in the No. 3 Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing machine, Fielding produced an outstanding performance in front of the massive crowds, and left the track in fourth in the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda standings after the first two races.
Racing in his first weekend with Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing as part of the Road to Indy program, which is sanctioned by the Indy Racing League, Fielding took on the challenge to win the series from the start.
Having been given the opportunity by the team, Fielding had only driven a single- seater race car five times after an impressive karting career, with many of his peers having already completed a season or more of racing.
After running close to the front in Friday’s 20-minute sessions, Saturday qualifying was a bit of a disappointment for the 20-year-old. Still learning the track, Fielding was on his quickest lap when the red flag came out after a competitor had hit the wall at Turn 1. The red flag regulated Fielding to the sixth starting position for the race.
At the start of Race 1, Fielding jumped up to fourth spot at Turn 1 but was hit from behind, which spin the car and dropped him back to ninth. Though there was damage to rear wing and drive shaft, Fielding moved through traffic and made his way to the fifth spot. After out-braking into Turn 1, Fielding lost two spots and finished seventh.
He posted the second-fastest lap of the race, however, which put him in the second starting position for the race the following day.
“It was a great race for me,” Fielding said. “I learned to overtake cars and race hard, slip streaming at 145mph and I showed what I do best. I thought the car was great, and then I found out I was racing with damage!”
Race two turned out to be the drive of the day. Starting second, Fielding held the position from the green to the checkered flag, holding off his teammate and pulling away at the end to set the third fastest lap.
On the podium, Fielding proved very popular with his new fans.
“Race two was easy,” Fielding said. “It was just a shame we could not challenge (Sage) Karam for the victory, but he was gone at the lights when I was stuck defending my position.
I was proud of my weekend. I would have liked to have had a win, but obviously we were not on the same equipment as others. I have given back to the team what they have given me as Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing is near the top of the team championship standings, which is amazing for us all. I intend to keep us there and work on getting my name to the top of the driver championship with them.”
Fielding would like to thank Premier Miller and Euro-Engines for support over the weekend, and would welcome any further partners to contact him via the below contacts, Fielding’s racing this season and making it up the Road to Indy is very dependent on funding for the 2010 season.
