ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (March 29, 2010) -- In the two races during Round 1 for the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing picked up two second-place finishes. Irishmen Patrick McKenna finished second in the first race, while Brit Josh Fielding followed up the next day with his second-place run.
McKenna qualified third in the No. 2 machine, with Fielding only a few spots back in sixth in the No. 3. In race one, McKenna passed for second halfway through the race and was able to hold off the machines behind him to stand on the podium with a second-place finish. Fielding was hit from behind early in the race and suffered rear wing and drive shaft damage, but still managed a seventh-place finish.
In race two, Fielding started second by posting the second-fastest lap during Race 1. He maintained his position from green to checker to claim his second-place finish. Fielding was not alone on the podium, as McKenna finished third. Both drivers finished strong, as Fielding posted his fastest lap on 19 of the 20 lap race, while McKenna’s flying time was put down on the final lap.
Both drivers finished on the lead lap in both races.
“This was a very successful weekend,” said Dominic Cape, Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing Technical Director. “Having three podium finishes is a great way to start the season. Both drivers and the team have worked very hard, and we expect good things to come.”
Up next for Fielding, McKenna and the Cooper Tires Presents the USF2000 National Championship Powered by Mazda is Round 2 at the O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis, Indiana, May 29 as part of the USAC weekend.
